The angels belong to nine choirs, which are divided into three hierarchies, all with a special role. The first hierarchy of angels consists of the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones. They are solely devoted to God and are full of love of Him and knowledge of His mysteries. The second hierarchy is composed of the Dominations, Virtues, and Powers. They are concerned with the management of human affairs, guarding the nations of the earth and carrying out God’s will. The third hierarchy is made up of the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. This hierarchy ministers in the world, and from the last choir, the angels, our guardian angels are selected.

Guardian angels minister to man in a special way. Every person, whether Christian or non-Christian, in a state of grace or state of sin, has a guardian angel. Angels are pure spirit, so they cannot be seen but are nevertheless present with us all the time.
Your guardian angel helps you in many ways. He wards off dangers to your body and soul and helps you overcome temptation and avoid near occasions of sin. Your guardian angel also instructs you and encourages holy thoughts and desires. He brings your prayers to God and prays for you. Your guardian angel will be with you all your life, comforting and strengthening you at the end of your earthly life and praising God alongside you in heaven.

Our guardian angels are worthy of a lot of respect. We ought to pray to him, be reverent of his presence, have confidence in his care, and be grateful for all he does for us. We also honor all the guardian angels every October 2nd, when we celebrate the Feast of the Guardian Angels. We should thank God for His loving providence in giving us angelic companions.
