If I had a role in the Catholic version of the movie “Elf”, I would be remembered for my line, “I just like going to Confession, Confession is my favorite.”
Why do I like the Sacrament of Reconciliation so much? Here are just a few of the many reasons:
- I’m a big fan of grace. I know that I need God’s grace to respond yes to His call in my life, to make the choices in life that bring me closer to him, and it is crucial in my working towards being holy, which I long to be because God is holy.
“But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy” 1 Peter 1:15 (NLT)
- I’m a sinner, sick in spirit, and in need of being healed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is just that, a Sacrament of healing. I bring my broken pieces to Jesus, and through his earthly instrument, the Priest, I do not have to guess if I’m made right with God and if my sins are forgiven. I can hear the words spoken, loud and clear, expelling all doubt. “Go in peace, your sins are forgiven.” This Sacrament is a true gift from God!
“When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor–sick people do.” Mt 9:12 (NLT)
- I believe it is very important to speak these feelings, thoughts and actions into the light, where Christ can shed light upon them. When I hold these in, I keep them in the dark recesses of my soul. Once spoken, they rarely feel as heavy, and the healing is immediately able to begin. In the dark, we do not see clearly, and we can easily deceive ourselves and miss the abundance of life and freedom Jesus died to give us.
“For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Cor 4:6
