Today’s Gospel: John 3: 13-17

In today’s Gospel we encounter one of the most quoted verses in the Christian world. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.” ( NAB)

Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth was to save people. The nature of His mission will also bring judgment for those who choose not to believe. By choosing not to believe, people are rejecting Christ and therefore condemning themselves in the afterlife.

As Catholics, we are pushed to believe there is more to this passage than simply saying these words and being granted eternal life. We are asked to live these words every day through faith, but also through words and actions. Salvation is a way of life not simply a declaration of faith.

A priest friend of mine has a great response to anyone who asks him if he is saved. He says, “I am saved every time I receive the Eucharist.” The salvation offered in the Eucharist is the Catholic way of life. This is what we believe every day and it is the way we acknowledge that we need saving.

Ponder:

Do I acknowledge every day that I need to be saved? Do my actions reflect this?

Pray:

Jesus, thank you so much for the gift of eternal life. Remind me what the cost was for you. Never allow me to take my salvation for granted. Amen.
