Book Talk with Fall Colors on Top

The nights are chilly and the days are crisp in my part of Ohio. That means the world’s turning into a rainbow all around me: from the painted sunsets to the trees with their splashes of bright primary colors. It’s starting to look like someone’s taken a large eraser to the bean fields as the farmers start harvesting. And oh! The reading!

Well, I didn’t finish anything this week. 🙁

Current Reads

The American Catholic Almanac: A Daily Reader of Patriots, Saints, Rogues, and Ordinary People Who Changed the United States, by Brian Burch and Emily Stimpson (Image Books, 2014)

I had this thought of starting to read this on a daily basis in October, because there are ALL THESE OTHER BOOKS on my pile, and maybe I will. (I feel pretty confident that, having read three-quarters of the book, I can write about it intelligently and review it fairly). We’ll see. It remains one of my favorite reads of the year.

UnSouled (Book 3 in the Unwind Dystology), by Neal Shusterman (YA fiction, Simon & Schuster, 2013)

Yes, I did start this last week (which was responsible for stalling my reading of the American Catholic Almanac). However, I’ve had this bad habit of falling asleep on the couch instead of staying awake until the wee hours of the morning devouring good fiction. I’m about 30% through this and loving it so far.

Up Next

The Giver, by Lois Lowry (fiction)

A couple of friends suggested we read this. I’m behind the ball on it and don’t know if I’ll get it read in time for our get-together. What inspired it was that one of my friend’s daughters had to read it for school. (That inspires us quite a bit these days.) I’ve been curious about it for a while, because it’s billed as a “modern classic,” which always makes me wiggle my eyebrows a bit and want to read it for myself.

What have YOU been reading lately?

*Are you on Goodreads? I’ll see you there!

  1. I haven’t read The Giver yet, but my 7th-grader is reading it now at school and I actually own a copy because one of the older kids read it for summer reading. I’ll have to take a peek at this one!

    • So maybe we could read it together. I have hopes of maybe finishing UnSouled tonight and then I’ll start The Giver. Maybe. It all hinges on whether I fall asleep on the couch… 🙂

  2. There’s a pretty sweet and affordable omnibus edition of The Giver Quartet that was released earlier this year. HMH is also releasing a 25th Anniversary Edition of Number the Stars also by Lowry. And lastly, HMH has an 80th Anniversary Edition of Mary the Poppins coming out soon.

  3. I am currently reading “Hannah Coulter” by Wendell Berry for my Well-Read Mom book club. For WRM, it has been deemed the “Year of the Spouse,” and this is proving to be an excellent first selection.
