Daily Gospel Reflection for June 25, 2015

Gospel Reflections 800x800 blue outlineToday’s Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29

The closing lines to today’s Gospel are the most telling for the crowds who were astonished at his teaching because “he taught them as one having authority.” In our own lives, we have experienced good advice and true advice. This may have come from astonishing places, but ultimately we knew the truth and, over time, learned who to trust like a rock for a firm foundation. But Jesus’ words also point to actions, and he is clear that we will find such faith and reliability when we put these words into action.

The word “religion” comes from the term meaning “to tie or be bound to.” Have we indeed tied ourselves to and entered into relationship with a God whose words and action are deeply trustworthy? Is our faith not in vain, but demonstrably reliable in word and action?

God of our Ancestors, who staked their way through the desert,
You dwelled in camp with us and watched over our coming and going.
But we were not to be a people built upon the sand
Nor a Kingdom to be wiped from the face of the earth.
Instead, you proclaim us as your Tabernacle
And upon our hearts your favor rests!

We thank our friends at The Word Among Us for providing our gospel reflection team with copies of Abide In My Word 2015: Mass Readings at Your Fingertips. To pray the daily gospels with this wonderful resource, visit The Word Among Us.
