Be of Good Cheer

There’s a lot of unrest in our nation these days, across communities, minds, and hearts.

We each have our unique fears and struggles. And then we add the weight of the world — violence, elections, terrorism, hatred — to what’s already heavy on our shoulders. It’s not hard to feel discouraged.

But hear these powerful, life-giving words from Our Lord:

In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. {John 16:33}

There is little in this world that we can ultimately control, a fact that’s not easy for me to come to terms with. I find myself grasping more and more at every aspect of my life, desperate for even a small sense of power in the face of so many uncertainties.

Suffering is hard. Tribulation can be almost unbearable at times, especially when we are powerless to know or control the outcome.

But there is Someone who does.

We can take great comfort in His promise to us that He has conquered the world — not that He will conquer, but He has already. And He shed His blood to seal the victory.

And what’s more, St. Paul tells us that we ourselves are “more than conquerers through Christ who loved us.” {Romans 8:37}

Our Savior has overcome, and we will triumph with Him in the end!
