A prayer collection by Sr Margaret Kerry, fsp
This prayerbook published by Pauline Books & Media dovetails with Pope Francis’s letter on evangelization, Joy of the Gospel. In his letter he outlines four proposals of evangelization:
1. Encounter Jesus Christ.
In the forward to Live Christ! Give Christ! Archbishop Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, writes:
The path of the new evangelization entails the recovery of a healthy spirituality. The primacy of contemplation in the mission of the new evangelization continues to be a central theme.
The prayers in this book are great primers as we enter into the presence of God. Archbishop Fisichella recommends them to help us get past the voices of secularism, agnosticism, and relativism. They serve as guides to profound listening and a greater capacity to deepen our relationship with Jesus. Live Christ! and find that your response is evangelization, Give Christ!
2. Engage the Culture
The second proposal of the new evangelization is the proclamation of the Gospel to engage the culture. These prayers “Knead us into the world of communication as Eucharistic bread that will nourish others’ minds and hearts.”
3. Transform Social, Economic, and Political Orders
Prayers on the Word of God, The Holy Eucharist, Reconciliation and Forgiveness help our understanding that God is with us in a seemly impossible task. Pope Francis tells us that “The very heart of the Gospel is life in community and engagement with others.” As we pray with St Paul we recognize that he knew how to engage the culture and change the world through God’s good news.
4. Unity among Believers and all People of Faith
We live in a culture of communication. It is our meeting point just as the Areopagus was the meeting point of the culture Paul evangelized. Prayers for those Engaged in the New Evangelization reminds us that we are constantly in communication with others in so many ways. Our choices must be informed by the Gospel. We need to experience evangelization first before we set out to evangelize. We are called to prayerfully discern our response to today’s issues.
Prayers inspired by the Pauline Charism
The prayers in this prayerbook are inspired by the Pauline Charism: Communicating the Gospel through Communication Media. Pauline Sisters and Brothers strive to Live Christ! Give Christ! The Pauline Family was founded by Blessed James Alberione in 1914. St. John Paul II called him the “first apostle of the new evangelization.” The Pauline Charism is a new expression of spirituality in the Church.
Beginning with Prayers to the Holy Trinity, first and perfect Community and Prime Communicator, Paulines consecrate themselves to the Trinity to remain intimate communication. They rely on the Holy Spirit to transform them into Christ. Mary, Queen of Apostles is always present in the midst of evangelizers. With her, Paulines pray for a new Pentecost. Without her, they know a new evangelization can never truly be understood. Alberione told his religious orders that St Paul was their actual founder. Prayers to St Paul, apostle and model evangelizer, give us light and encouragement as we engage with new media for the Gospel.
Other prayers specific to this Pauline book include use of social media, prayers for artists, writers, producers, praying the news, Eucharistic offertory, and prayers for reconciliation. The chapter on praying the Word of God to become a living Word of God is a highlight of this book.
This book has a great price point for bulk orders.
