Today’s Gospel: Luke 6:43-49 – Sts. Cornelius & Cyprian
As an elementary school librarian, I am constantly reminded of the importance of building a strong foundation for a child, so that he or she can grow into a tree that bears good fruit. We are God’s children; always and forever. How are we building a strong foundation from which we can continue to grow into the person God desires us to be?
In this passage, Jesus reminds us what someone is like who comes to Him, listens to His words, and acts on them. “That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built.”
The other day, I was bone-tired from a long day at work, and a zillion hassles with people, technology, and traffic. I came home, and all I wanted to do was zone out, watch a movie, eat a bowl of popcorn, and forget about everything. But just as I walked into the house, the phone rang. I could see that my younger sister, who was struggling to find a job, was calling. Standing there, frozen, I looked at the phone, but didn’t pick it up.
After dinner, I put my feet up on the sofa, pulled out my cell phone and returned the call. I have learned over the years that I sometimes need to take a break and refresh myself, in order to be more present and available to really listen to someone in need. The conversation turned out to be mutually supportive, as we listened to each other and shared our lives.
Reflect upon what allowed you to be present to another today, and what closed you down from being present.
Dear Jesus, show me the way to come to You, listen, and take action in my daily life, even when I don’t feel capable. May Your grace help me.
