This is the title of a new book from Ave Maria Press by Ulrich L. Lehner. The full title is: God is not Nice: Rejecting Pop Culture Theology and Discovering the God Worth Living For. It reminds me of today’s Gospel.
People are abandoning the churches in part because the God that is being preached is so nice. God is like a psychiatrist, a counselor and a life coach, whom we can call on in times of need. But when all is fine in our lives, we don’t bother Him much. So, this God doesn’t play a role in our lives, and grace has no chance to transform us.
God wants us to be transformed, to be uncomfortable in our lives and to stretch toward heaven.
This untamed but good God is present in our families, challenging us to be different, to be His missionary disciples, living with joy and an endless sense of adventure. At the dinner table with your family tonight, discuss what God’s challenge means for each of you and together as a family too.
May you each accept God’s invitation for a great adventure that will change our life and make you dare to attempt great things!
Each weekday, the homily from Daily Mass at Holy Cross Family Ministries is shared online. Visit Family Rosary: World at Prayer and sign up to receive notifications of each day’s homily.
