Daily Gospel Reflection for October 28, 2017 - Sts. Simon & Jude

Today’s Gospel: Luke 6:12-16 – Sts. Simon & Jude

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” John 15:16

Remember what it was like to stand on the playground as a child waiting to be picked for the team? Waiting breathlessly to have your name called while pleading internally, “Pick me!”? What did it mean to be “chosen”? That you were seen, special, wanted, or perhaps gifted?

Conversely, do you remember not being chosen — for the team, as a date to the dance, for the cheerleading squad? Most of us can also vividly recall being crushed at not being selected for something we’d set our hearts on, or we remember watching our children go through similar growing pains.

Memories of being chosen can be a mixed bag, and they can cast a shadow over a profound truth: that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). God willed us into being with His effusive love, and He holds our very being in existence with the same extravagant love in each and every second. We are loved and wanted—chosen!—by a God who seeks a personal, intimate, loving relationship with us. God chooses us, pursues us, and then patiently waits for our response. When we say yes, He then satisfies us with the very thing we’ve set our hearts on—Himself.

The same God who created the vast universe has called us by name. He has purposed our existence for an eternity of love, and has called us to receive that love right here, right now. Today, let’s pray for the grace to respond accordingly.

Do I truly believe that God knows me and chose me? Have I responded wholeheartedly to the invitation to love and be loved by God?

Father, help me appreciate the profundity of the reality that I am chosen and loved by You. May I never take it for granted, and may I live each day of my life with a vibrant “yes” in my heart in response to Your initiative of love.
