Daily Gospel Reflection for November 12, 2017 - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

One of my favorite priests has a favorite saying: God has no grandchildren.

At first it seems a little cold – of course God loves and knows your grandchildren! But the meaning is a little deeper: each one of us must accept God as our Father in our own right. While we can inherit a Catholic culture, we cannot inherit the faith of our parents – at some point we have to stand up and claim it as our own.

That’s what I see in this parable today. While the foolish would wish to lean on the wise and use their oil for their own purposes, it doesn’t work that way. We can be together and accompany each other on the journey, but we have to fuel our own lamps, and we have to walk our own path…otherwise God will not recognize us when our time comes.

What habits do you have from how you were raised in your faith that have helped you make your faith your own?

Lord, help me to take the habits of faith I was raised with and form my own. Help me know You as Your child, not Your grandchild.
