More Americans than ever give Boxes of Joy to impoverished children

Box of Joy, a program of Cross Catholic Outreach that seeks to collect and distribute Christmas gift boxes for impoverished children in Latin America, will be delivering more than 45,000 Boxes of Joy to needy children in four countries: Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Guatemala. More than 476 Catholic parishes, schools and groups across 48 states participated in the Box of Joy program this year.

“Americans and their families have shown the compassion and love of Christ above and beyond our expectations this year,” said Jim Cavnar, president of Cross Catholic Outreach. “We are thrilled to bring Christmas joy to these children suffering from extreme poverty.”

The Box of Joy program — only in the second year as a nationwide outreach — is growing rapidly, as parishes, families and individuals take the opportunity to show the spirit of Christmas to these children, giving small gifts to kids who would otherwise receive nothing.

“These items, as ordinary as they may be, are treasures to a child who otherwise would not receive a gift of any sort,” said Most Rev. Thomas J. Rodi, archbishop of Mobile, in a FoxNews.com op-ed. “And it gives families a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate charity to their children during the holidays as they shop together to pack their own box.”

One parish in Florida, Our Lady of Light, heard about Box of Joy on a radio program and got involved last year. This year the parish packed 340 boxes, double the amount from last year.

Kristin Lloyd, who coordinated the Box of Joy program at Our Lady of Light, told the National Catholic Register that “Box of Joy opens our eyes to the fact that not everyone is as materially blessed as we are in this country, and it provides a way to experience the giving of Christmas, rather than the receiving of Christmas — and the fact that there’s a real child on the other end of this box who’s receiving joy, the joy of Christ.”

There is still time to participate in Box of Joy by shipping your boxes to the national screening center via UPS or Fedex before Christmas or purchasing a pre-packed Box of Joy online. Details are on the website.
