Undoubtedly in our world today, many people have decided they do not believe in a higher power. Others reject religion’s claims about this higher power, citing the impossibility of a loving God, the presence of evil in the world, and even our inability to know anything with certainty at all.
For many, reason, logic, and science have stamped out the existence of God.
But in his new book Going Deeper, Leo Severino presents the idea that logic should lead us to reality.
Severino leads us through a quest for the ultimate truth, one chapter at a time. Going Deeper is essentially a series of mind puzzles that we must work through.
Though Severino provides a set of solutions to these puzzles and guides us through what he presents as sound, logical arguments, it is ultimately up to each reader to decide whether to accept his solutions. The puzzles build upon each other and finally crescendo to explain not only the existence of God, but the existence of His deep love for us all.
However, this book is intentionally crafted to carefully not even mention the name God until about halfway through. In a sense, there are bigger fish to fry first. There are bigger hurdles in the minds and hearts of some that must first be overcome, understood, or realized before one could possibly choose to hold a belief in the existence of God in the first place. But Severino is going to attempt to get us there, or as far as possible, through logic alone.
Severino’s unique background in philosophy, law, and filmmaking provides a fascinating undercurrent to his narration. With lively analogies that address a myriad of allegedly scientific and logic-based arguments against the existence of truth and God, Severino presents a fresh approach to the big questions in life.
Why are we here? What is the purpose and meaning of life? Does God even exist? Can we even be sure? How can we know anything at all? How can anything ever really be omnipotent, omniscient, and all-loving?
Many claim that reason and logic have led them away from any possible faith in God, resulting in a deep-seeded atheism or agnosticism. Others are finding their faith shaken as they delve deeper into claims of modern day science. In Going Deeper, Severino invites us all to explore those depths of science, reason, and logic, and to hold fast to what is true.
One book alone cannot possibly answer every question, issue, or doubt we may hold about faith in God. But in Going Deeper, perhaps readers will find themselves asking, “What if reason actually leads straight to God?”
And this question – this might just change everything.
