I had the privilege of reviewing a little book called My Year With The Saints For Kids, compiled by Peter Celano. This sweet book caught my attention as soon as I looked at it. The small and easy-to-hold book with beautiful pictures of the saints seemed made for small hands, who are seeking the Faith.

Inside there are short, two-paragraph entries for each day of the week. Sometimes the entry starts with a thought about the Faith or life and is followed in the second paragraph by a quote from a saint, discussing the topic. Other days there may be a Bible verse followed by a saint quote. Sometimes I found a saint quote first and then a thought about the topic brought up by the saint.

This easy-to-use book is sure to be a jewel for our youth, but also for their parents. It’s simple enough for children and short enough to hold their attention, while still leaving the parents with a wisdom of the faith that can be shared in the household throughout the day.

Here is a sample:

September 1:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. –Jeremiah 1:5a (NIV)

Dear God, you know me better than I know myself! I find that both exciting and bit scary! (I can’t hide anything from you!)

I also appreciated that each day of the year is included in this book, as sometimes I feel like it takes a few volumes to share a daily saint. The book, which is not much bigger that my hand, could be kept in the kitchen or on the dining-room table, without taking up much space. This simple book, with so much to offer our daily lives, would be a blessing to any household. It’s even a great idea to give as a gift for First Holy Communion or Confirmation.
