iPosture: Is Too Much Screen Time Prematurely Aging Our Kids?

0

ipostureMy radio segment this morning for the Sonrise Morning Show with Brian Patrick (airing at 8:50 am ET) has to do with a recent article in the Daily Mail Online entitled, “Do You Suffer from iPosture?”

An overview of the article spells out the most important points of a recent UK survey:

Tablets and smartphones are causing an epidemic of back pain as people hunch over devices:

  • 84 per cent of 18-24 year olds have admitted to suffering back pain in the last 12 months, according to a survey by Simplyhealth
  • The results also showed almost all age groups spend as much time in front of a PC, laptop or tablet screen in total as they do asleep in bed
  • Brian Hammond, CEO of BackCare, warned hunching over handheld devices is a contributory factor in back pain reported by different generations

As the mom of two young men and someone in an older demographic, this study made me wake up and pay attention. Number one, I don’t want my sons prematurely injuring their health due to too much screen time. Secondly — if I’m being honest — my own work-time posture is pretty darn slovenly.

While you’re at work today, pay attention to your posture. Whether or not you’re in front of a computer or working on a device, pay attention to how much time you spend slouching. Does your work environment lend itself to good posture? If not, today’s the day to look at getting a better set up, changing your chair and becoming more conscious about your overall posture. Don’t worry, I’m diagnosing the same homework for myself.

If you need a little help, here are ten great posture improving tips from Spine-Health.com.

A question for you: Do you have bad posture?
