Today’s Gospel: Luke 12:49-53

If we look at this passage with a secular world view, it sounds like Jesus wants to bring destruction instead of peace. But let us look closer: “I have come to set the world on fire and how I wish it were already blazing!” Is Jesus talking about destroying the earth or setting it ablaze with His love and the fire of the Holy Spirit? It is through fire that the apostles were blessed at Pentecost. Fire symbolizes the Holy Spirit. It is through fire that we are purified. Jesus asks us to be on fire for Him, not just lukewarm. In this way, He has come to set the world on fire.

“Do you think I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, but rather division.” Of course, God would love to have the world agree and accept Jesus, however, Jesus knows that this is not how the world is. He knows that He is in the world and not of it, just like the rest of us who follow him. In that sense, we can expect division among ourselves, families and communities.

Ponder:

How on fire am I for God today? Am I willing to risk negative responses from the world in order to honor Him? Did I make Him a priority in my life or did I barely have time to utter a prayer in His direction? God awaits us, with open arms.

Pray:

Dear Jesus, how wise you are! Come, Holy Spirit, and set me afire for you.
